Johann König Gallery

2006, Berlin (DE)

The design for the Johann König Gallery is a reconversion of an old warehouse to an art gallery. The raw industrial depository, stripped from its initial function of producing, stocking and removing is in all aspects a space of transition.

The dimensions of the gallery originate in the existing quality of the building. Rational in structure it is representative for its original purpose. The project is a research into the implicit balance between existing architecture with its rooflights and gallery architecture with well defined spaces. Spaces that house different functions. Every space is placed in direct relationship to the rooflight.

An object architecture, an architecture that is conceited, is not appropriate in this context. The transition of art and audience should be central. The aim of this project is not to achieve the originality of a manifesto, but rather to present an architectural attitude more or less unchanged in the course of time.

The old is old, the new is new, possibilities are encompassed in future interventions.
